Featured Factory Partner: Egedeniz Textile
From day one, we’ve been committed to making clothes differently by putting sustainable and social practices first. For our factory partnerships, this means working with companies that prioritize people and the planet, push for innovation, and invest in their local communities.
Together we’ve been able to create some of our most beloved Toad styles and we’re excited to spotlight their progressive initiatives.
We've proudly partnered with Egedeniz Textile in Turkey for more than 20 years when we co-developed our soft and innovative Samba fabric (it's beloved, longstanding, and exclusive to Toad&Co – IYKYK). As Turkey's first certified organic textile company, Egedeniz has long been an industry leader in prioritizing sustainability and forward-thinking practices. Here’s just a glimpse at their tireless work over the years:
How Egedeniz Textile Uses Solar Energy to Reduce Their Carbon Footprint
Since 2014, their center building has used solar energy to reduce the factory’s reliance on traditional energy sources and decrease their carbon footprint. Today, 40% of their headquarters’ energy usage comes from on-site solar panels.
Regenerative Cotton Farming Practices
In 2021, Egedeniz Textile embarked on a journey to transform cotton cultivation with regenerative fundamentals. This means actively restoring and revitalizing the ecosystems that cotton is grown in with mulching, crop rotation, cover crop usage, no tilling methods, and measuring CO2 emissions.
Organic Cotton in Conversion
Think of these fibers as organic-in-the-making – they’re sourced from farms that are making the shift to organic practices, but aren’t quite certified yet (the certification process takes years). Egedeniz makes products using organic cotton in conversion – which supports farmers who are dedicated to sustainable agriculture and paves the way for a more responsible textile industry as a whole.
Hemp Cultivation and Carbon Offsetting
Egedeniz Textile established a local hemp farm to support low-impact fiber production and strengthen local supply chains. They also commit to planting 1,000 trees a year to offset carbon emissions.
Living Wage Project and Women’s Empowerment Initiatives
Their Living Wage Project was founded in 2017 to ensure employees are paid a livable wage. Additionally, they provide job training for women trying to enter the workforce and have been a signatory of the UN’s Women’s Empowerment Principles since 2018.
How These Factory Practices Make a Difference
- Cleaner energy → lower carbon footprint per garment
- Regenerative farming → restores soil health and biodiversity
- Organic cotton in conversion → drives the apparel industry to a more sustainable future
- Localized fiber production → fewer shipping emissions
- Living wages → more equitable communities
